History has been a pivotal area in recent decades, but Arnold Toynbee`s tour de force has placed him as a referential point. It studies history not as a single factor in making human civilization, rather it is a combination of intermingle factors of vast range of cultural, conflictual and natural struggling process. Today, the Study of History is a compelling classic text as it has been since its publishing so many decades ago. It teaches us that history is not a subject to be remembered, but a matter to be interpreted rationally.

This is a well-known (by historians) approach to history. Yes, some critics may decry the slide towards Christian theology (and I am not a Christian myself, by any means), but overall the work outlines some important ways to judge how societies evolve, thrive, and possibly fail. Well worth reading.
